First, the good news, Salesforce.com continues to innovate around how the platform can be extended and they continue to enhance the Lightning Component Framework. The Lightning Component framework is a UI specifically for developing single-page web apps for mobile and desktop devices.
There are two programming models: Aura Components and Lightning Web Components. The Lightning Web Components are based on custom HTML elements, built using HTML and JavaScript. Both Aura Components and Lightning Web Components can co-exist and interoperate on a page.
